top middle relievers?

Postby tuff_gong » Thu Apr 21, 2005 8:33 pm

Guys, I know nothing about middle relievers, I'm not sure why, but no one in my leagues seems to know a whole lot about them, some people just have a few stashed on their bench. Can you guys give me your rankings for the top middle relievers like top 10 or something?

well this year so far has been a bit funky as far as MR goes - most people you'd think would be solid have been being hit up a good amount...for example...

tom gordon - maybe he's falling off at his old age, he seemed to itire at the end of last year, maybe it's carried over...
akinori otsuka - great year last year but maybe his eccentric delivery has been adjusted to...

there are the young guns that are good and that have a chance of taking over closer jobs if the current closer gets injured and self-destructs, like ryan wagner and mike gonzalez

then there are guys who will give you solid numbers/ratios like scott linebrink, kiki calero, scot shields and damaso marte...

the best of all is very arguably juan rincon...

and by the way, since ive never been in a league that counts holds, im not taking that into consideration...

These guys all have decent-to-good opps for holds and vulture saves with helpful-to-excellent ratios and K/9s:

Cream of the Crop:

Rincon
Calero
Duchscherer (under the radar but great peripherals...)
Marte
Shields
Otsuka
Ayala (Cordero is on short leash...)
Gonzalez
Donnelly
Gordon (making me nervous, but still deserving...)

The 2nd Tier:

Torres
Hermanson
Street
RWagner
Betancourt
Howry (maybe)
Crain (maybe)
Bruney (maybe)
Turnbow (maybe)

I wrote an article on middle relievers on my site exactly because of this. Not many people know which are the best so this should help you out a lot...

one name i havent seen mentioned is al reyes for the cards. having a great year so far. was never really given an opportunity before now although he pitched fairly well every time he was called up. should have decent ratios and more than one k per inning. somewhat similar to kiko calero.

I saw this Reyes dude was doing well also. I thought about picking him up in one of my holds leagues, but I have so many players already that I can't seem to fit him in. He plays for a good team and is doing well, so I guess he's someone to watch.
