I think that thats not used because you never know the bounce the pitch will take, It could bounce right back to the catcher and then your out at first. I think its too risky.
Unless, you could look to see where it bounced and then just swing the bat and start running. But the pitch probably would already have been called a ball by that time.
I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. -Crash Davis
