who to keep in a 6x6 keeper league?

Postby Gaucho » Mon Jan 06, 2003 4:27 pm

We get to keep six players in our league and four of my six are already locked in with Zito, Garciaparra, Jeter, and Manny Ramirez. But which two of the following four players should I hold on to?

Maddux
Matt Morris
Ichiro
Sweeney

I'd like to start the draft with two pitchers and four position players, but i'm flexible.

Keep Morris, Ichiro, and Sweeney. Get rid of Jeter and his declining OPS trends. You have Nomar anyway.

Jeter is just about as overhyped as they get. Remember when they said he was as good as A-Rod. What a joke.

Jeter is a joke compared to A-rod but not compared to most SS. I'd rank my SS in this order:

A-rod
Nomar
Jeter

Sometimes i'd even put jeter above nomar because he steals bases.

All of these players are at roughly the same level, and any combination could work well with your other keepers. Ichiro and Morris would be my call, but Maddux is right behind - only his age makes him a bit less attractive in a keeper league. Sweeney loses out because of the depth at 1b...

Is this roto? How important are sb? Morris is a must. Ichiro/Maddux a toss up. Unless sb are huge, i might lean Maddux. On Jeter, yes hes overrated. However, last year he earned $30, beating Ichiro $28, Nomar $29. Jeters sb makes him a roto keeper.

Yes, this is a roto league. Cat.'s for position players are obp; slg%; sb-cs, r+rbi-hr,k's, and fielding percentage. For pitchers: 2xw-l, era, whip, k's per 9 innings pitched, holds and saves.

Jeter has a phenomenal success rate at stealing bases which really pumps his value in the league. His success rate has been over 90% for the last 3 seasons.

As much as I like Ichiro he does get caught stealing a lot, which dramatically drops his sb value. He's still excellent, but not one of the top three or four base stealers because of how often he gets caught stealing. Ichiro's lack of strikeouts definitly is a plus though. Certainly helps offset Manny Ramirez' k's.

I bet Bonds does really good in that league. I don't see how you keep up with those kinds of stats. The only other stat i'd like to see added would be walks in the typical 5X5 cats.

Walks are definitly a fun category, but we figured they were factored into obp and we would just be counting them twice.

Bonds is a monster.
