I dont think this was the wrong answer. Actually the way i should have worded the question was who did he replace that was the everyday player.

Damn it was Rayford... I looked at SS, not 3B. Forgot Cal started out at the hot corner. I have his 82 Topps RC so I shoulda remembered :*)

Ripken started his 2,632 consecutive-game streak when he replaced Sakata at shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles, May 30, 1982

Ripken started his streak at 3B, and was moved to SS in July.

And I did a bit of checking on Gehrig, and found one source that has him entering the game for Merkle, who was having trouble with the heat, and another that says he replaced Pee Wee Wanninger. Hmm...

Very tough question! :-)

Sakata played the whole game at SS that day. Ripken played the whole game at 3B. The only player to have a replacement was the pitcher - Jim Palmer - who was taken out for Tippy Martinez in the 9th inning with one out.

So I don't know how to really define "replaced" since he started the game. I would assume it would refer to the player who played 3B the day before, which was Floyd Rayford.

Ripken didn't get his first start at SS until the 28th game of his streak. The first 27 games he started at 3B so I would think Floyd Raford is the player he replaced.
