my league scores W, K, SV, HLD, ERA, WHIP. we have 4 sp spots and 3 rp. i'm trying to sneak in some holds by having a middle reliever who qualifies as a starter take up one of my sp spots (i never have 4 starters going at once). here are two guys i'm looking at:
scott schoenweis
matt wise
can someone help me make a decision? will either hurt my era and/or whip? thanks.
yeah ive actually been wondering this myself... in my league closers with sp eligibility are so valuable, but really a save is 7 and a hold is 5... so if there are any legit hold guys with sp eligiblity i would love to know about it...
dah, there's no huge difference between these guys. i'm going with wise, just because schoenweis got shelled today and i think hermanson might only pitch long relief. maybe not the best reasons, but oh well. if anyone wants to weigh in...
I'd take Hermanson. After his performance in SF last year, I think the Sox grabbed him as insurance against injuries or their closer faltering. He probably won't get a lot of saves, but he might pick up a few, and I think he'll get some holds here and there.
Schoeneweis is not a good pitcher, though he'll only hurt your ERA marginally (4.38 ERA in relief during his career).
Your wisemen don't know how it feels to be thick as a brick...
Is Hermanson even the #1 righty setup man for CWS? Luis Vizcaino has really good stuff. 7th inning middle relief pitchers do get a significant amount of saves (Linebrink), but is he even going to be pitching much then? Perhaps Ozzie may use Marte and Vizcaino in each respective inning (7 and 8) a lot. I don't really know if Hermanson's going to accumulate that many holds.
