Apr 3 Phillies manager Charlie Manuel made a last-day decision on Sunday to start Placido Polanco over Chase Utley at second base this season. Manuel added that the two would split time, but he did not label the situation a platoon. "I wish I could play both of them, but that's how it is," Manuel told the Associated Press.
Views: Utley was one of our favorite middle infield sleepers this season thanks to his solid bat and hold on the starting job. As such, this news is very disheartening. We were hoping Utley would see 500 or more at-bats this season, but now we'll have to limit his projection to 250-300 at-bats.
