News Phillies manager Charlie Manuel made a last-day decision on Sunday to start Placido Polanco over Chase Utley at second base this season. Manuel added that the two would split time, but he did not label the situation a platoon. "I wish I could play both of them, but that's how it is," Manuel told the Associated Press.
Views Utley was one of our favorite middle infield sleepers this season thanks to his solid bat and hold on the starting job. As such, this news is very disheartening. We were hoping Utley would see 500 or more at-bats this season, but now we'll have to limit his projection to 250-300 at-bats.
Are u freakin kidding me? Utley looked like one of the most promising 2B this year...now I might as well drop him because of this mess...
This field, this game, it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh people will come Ray, people will most definitely come.
Wow. This is really a surprise to me. Utley has the talent to play everyday, and if he does he should be a top 10 2B. I think this is a big mistake by Phillies management.
I have both Brian Roberts and Utley. My plan was to switch off between the 2. Ride out ones hot-streak. I really liked Utley's potential. Last year in the end of my draft I got Loretta and he was my second base steal. This year I was hoping Utley could do the same
Utley is only 3 years younger than Polanco, I don't see how this is such a bad move. I don't know much about their defense, but I am going to assume that Polanco is the better defender.
If Utley were only 24 years old, then yeah it's a dumb move to stop a youngster like that....but I don't think he's really got the potential that everyone thinks he does. Just my opinion, bring on the insults, Utley backers.
