catcher strategy (sleepers?)

Postby INKcogKNEEdough » Fri Apr 01, 2005 1:07 am

wow just got the final reserves for my very deep 18 team keeper league and LOTS of catchers were kept. This brings up the very real possibility that at least one of if not BOTH of my catchers will either have to be slugs that actually HURT my team(which i hate to do) OR a sleeper. Any ideas?

which do you prefer....take a future guy that may not play much if at all before the allstar break(barring a lucky break) but COULD produce fairly well when he DOES get a shot OR take that bottom tier catcher and at least reap the benefits of his 10 homers and 20 rbis he MIGHT get you while single handedly obliterating your BA with a cool .220.????

I WAS hoping to get buck for a buck or two but his spring is prolly going to make that unlikely......Jason phillips is another....

I am looking for someone cheap, with a decent chance to play this year, and potential keeper material. Quiroz and Shoppach will certainly be available but shoppach wont play at all this year most likely and Quiroz i am not so sure about.

any ideas?

thanks INK

Just a hunch, but I like Brian Schneider in Washington. He's coming into the prime age for catchers so you'll know if he's keeper-worthy by the end of the season.

Toby Hall, good minor league numbers, maybe this is the year he figures it out.

Nice try, guys, with Schneider and Hall but I don't see how they could be available. It's an 18 team keeper, which means every starter and most of the backups are history. That likely means guys like Todd Greene, both of the 'Zona catcher, etc. are all owned.

I think in order to come up with a response that's of any quality, we need clarification as to who's available that currently is on a major league roster before opting for a minor league possibility.

But just off the top, I'll mention SD backup Miguel Ojeda. Probably only catches 25-30% of the games, but he's not awful. Figure him for the .260 range with a bit of pop.

For a keeper league the more talked about young "sleepers" have been Buck (KC) and Closser (COL).

If you are looking for a regular, I think you called it with Phillips. Some regular play and getting out of NY should help him.

But if you want to fly under the radar, how about Todd Greene (COL). He had a decent avg. and I believe he lead the league with pitch hit RBI's last year. Also, since Closser had a poor spring adn is still wet behind the ears I suspect Greene may even swipe some starts behind the plate (especially in April) this year.

Treanor on FL if Loduca doesnt somehow play all 162 like it seems he is capable of doing. But FL weather may wear him down a bit so there's a chance Treanor may see more games.
