A Charlotte County deputy exposed a plot by a Punta Gorda man to beat his probation drug tests, finding a fake penis attached to a plastic bladder and elastic belt during a late Monday traffic stop.
Jeffery Neal Thompson, 42, of 2225 Yeoman Court, told the deputy he uses the contraption for urine tests, sheriff's spokesman Robert Carpenter said.
Thompson's probation for drug use would have ended today, sheriff's officials said.
The deputy uncovered the unusual item when he pulled over Thompson's red Corvette, which was running people off the road in the area of Peachland and Veterans boulevards in Port Charlotte. The search also yielded 7 grams of marijuana and 25 Valium pills, police said. The fake penis and components were in a plastic bag.
"I guess they spray out the urine and fake out the probation officer," Carpenter said. "I'm just wondering who makes these things."
State probation officials in Lee County said these prosthetic penis contraptions have become somewhat common in ongoing attempts to fool probation officers at urine tests. One such item called the Whizzinator is available on a Web site for $150. The site even sells dehydrated urine.
But men are not alone in their efforts to provide phony urine samples. Women have been caught using condoms filled with urine and surgical tubing attached to their arms, state probation officials said. Others try to smuggle "clean" urine in tiny tubes for the test, Carpenter said.
Authorities could charge people who attempt such stunts with misdemeanor fraud, officials said.
Thompson was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor marijuana possession, drug paraphernalia possession and resisting arrest without violence. He was taken to the Charlotte County Jail with a $4,000 bail.
