The Matt Riley/ Morgan Ensberg Awards

Postby GiantFan666 » Wed Mar 30, 2005 7:00 pm

Ok guys I think we should establish a cafe award for most over-hyped player coming out of spring training each year. In the AL it would be known as the Riley award and in the NL the Ensberg...
Do we have any nominees thus far??

I second Kolb! That's for sure! Couldn't agree more :-°

Overhyped - doesn't mean I think they will bust, but I feel like they are just overvalued in general. I don't think this candidate will be anything like Ensberg, but I feel like he is just being regarded to highly....David Wright. I think he will be very good - though I do not see a 30/20 season like some are predicting - not yet, at least.

Bonderman is another one...being treated like he is the second coming. Expect an ERA around 4, 175k's and 12 Wins and you'll be happy, but if you expect a number 2 starter - I'd look elsewhere.

Bonderman in the AL and Wright in the NL....eerily similar to Riley and Ensberg in terms of position and how they were being projected just last year. I think Bonderman and Wright will do much better than Riley and Ensberg, but not to the level people are expecting...

I'd say MORNEAU, people are saying he has great potential and just needs more at-bats, sounds a lot like our old friend Ensberg.

i would have thought so too with all of the stuff that he went through, until i read this....

Justin Morneau - First Baseman

Justin Morneau had two hits against Baltimore yesterday to raise his spring batting average to .250.
Morneau is returning from a myriad of injuries, and is finally starting to feel healthy. ''He's getting a little more confident,'' manager Ron Gardenhire said. ''The physical part of it, we know he's a little behind. But I think once you start getting a couple hits, you start feeling better about yourself.'' Mar. 28 - 7:35 am et

he could be starting to get a little bit stronger.....

Ensberg doesn't have anywhere near the track record Morneau has. Morneau hit 41 dingers between AAA and the majors last year as a 23 year old. Ensberg's single season best was 28, but that came as a 25 year old still playing in AA. I think the people projecting a batting average any further north than .270-.275 are reaching, but Morneau will slug.
