Not huge news here for fantasy world, but some people might have had him for his stolen base potential, plus this ups Sledge's value a bit (could get upwards of 25 homers with 500 at bats).
Endy Chavez, CF WAS
News: The Nationals sent outfielder Endy Chavez, who had been expected to start in center field and hit in the leadoff spot, to Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday. He struggled this spring with a .212 batting average, a .257 on-base percentage and only two walks.
Analysis: "We just felt like he wasn't doing the job we needed him to do at the top of the lineup," Washington manager Frank Robinson said. "He's not walking, he's not bunting. He's just swinging, and that's not enough up here." Last season, he hit .277 and stole 32 bases for the Expos, and the team wanted him to get on base more to spark the offense. Chavez's Rotisserie value goes to nil right now, because Triple-A stolen bases don't count on this website -- or any.
Wow, adding to this craazy story, not only does Church make the squa, they are starting him in CF over Sledge according to Rotoworld. There goes Sledge's fantasy value. Church has mild value, not much different than Sledge would have had.
Nationals manager Frank Robinson said he plans to use Ryan Church as his starting center field and keep Terrmel Sledge as a fourth outfielder.
And they wonder why we don't like him. Robinson kept saying at the end of last season how Sledge was ready to be a regular, and he pretty much refused to play Church, going with Sledge and Juan Rivera over him during September. Church hasn't played any better than Sledge this spring, so that's not it. Apparently, Robinson is going with Church because he believes he covers more ground in center. He probably does, but he's still not a true center fielder, and the Nationals would still be a little better off with Brad Wilkerson in center. Really, there isn't much difference between Church and Sledge offensively. Both are solid but unspectacular left-handed hitters. Church figures to hit for a little more power and a little less average than Sledge. Since he'll always be in jeopardy of losing playing time, don't spend a lot to get him in NL-only leagues. $6 would be about right. Mar. 29 - 8:24 pm et
What happened to Chavez? He hit .212 this spring and only walked twice. Ryan Church is going to start in CF putting Wilkerson in LF and Guillen in RF. Of course Wilkerson will fill in at 1st sometimes for N.Johnson (because he is always hurt and generally sux.) Sledge should have some value in NL only leagues as the National's 4th OF>
Unless of course they call Chavez back up and keep Sledge on the bench. Church isn't a natural CF. You've gotta think they want Chavez in CF over either Church or Sledge at some point this year.
