Brad Penny update?

Postby red » Mon Mar 28, 2005 11:21 pm

Call out to Dodger fans: any thoughts on Penny this year? What is the news about him? Is he healthy? Is he throwing? Will he be ready within a few weeks, within a few months? What are people saying over there about his recovery?
Thanks for anything you have.

I hate the Dodgers with a passion, but here are your updates:

Mar. 26, 2005 - 11:27 am et

Brad Penny took another step forward, throwing 30 pitches to Dodger pitchers with bats in their hands.
Manager Jim Tracy said there's still a chance Penny could pitch in a Grapefruit League game before the Dodgers break camp Thursday.

Mar. 22, 2005 - 7:50 pm et

Brad Penny, returning from a biceps nerve problem, threw 46 pitches in a simulated game today.
''His velocity is right there. The power in his arm, perfect,'' said third baseman Jose Valentin after facing him. Penny is expected to throw another simulated game on Friday before making his exhibition debut next week. He's going to open the season on the disabled list, but he ready to join the rotation in mid-April.

Well, there are the updates.

From a fantasy standpoint, considering where he's going this year, I'd definitely take a flyer. You can basically spend a late teen pick on him. He has the upside to post an ERA in the mid to high 3's, WHIP below 1.3, especially with the help of Dodger Stadium. You can't beat that kind of value late in a draft. He's only 26, by the way.

Agreed, he's going incredibly cheap right now. Picked him up in the 16th round in a 12 teamer yesterday. That's great value as far as I'm concerned.
