Houston Astros outfielder Lance Berkman faced live pitching for the first time this spring when he stepped in against Roger Clemens on Wednesday in a simulated game. Berkman, recovering from offseason knee surgery, said his timing was off but basically felt good at the plate, the Houston Chronicle reported. Berkman is not expected back in the lineup until late April, at the earliest.
First of all, imagine the joy of this one... the first time you've seen a real ball thrown at you by a real pitcher in quite a while, and it's Roger Clemens tossing a brick your way...
But my real question is this- can someone describe what exactly is a simulated game or simulated start? You hear about recovering pitchers doing this all the time- usually 3ish innings- but I don't really know what they mean. Is there always a live batter like this? Is the batter trying to swing away and get some hits? If the batter makes contact, does the pitcher have to throw another "at bat" before taking the inning break? What's going on? Muchas gracias
