Reed can't make his start Friday against Boston, so Santana gets the call. Unfortunately, the whole situation seems stacked against him since he is facing Pedro and one of the best teams in the league.
Would you recommend letting him start on Friday or leaving him on the bench to see how he will handle starting? I have a feeling that Pedro and Santana could combine for something like 25 K's (thankfully I can watch the game on WSBK), but I can also see Santana getting lit up because he isn't conditioned to start. What would you do?
I have Santana, too, and I'm thinking about letting him start for me. In 7 of 11 appearances (including Tuesday), he has pitched at least 2 innings. In one appearance he pitched 4 innings. I'm not worried about stamina. He may not get the win against Pedro, but I'll take his 1.59 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, not to mention the strikeouts, any day.
It probably all depends on how injured Reed is and when he can come back. I doubt they will bump any of their current starters for Santana unless he throws a perfect game or something. Also, it is going to be an awful start against the BoSox and duelling with Pedro.
I'd start him because he is eyeing this start like Pete Townsend at a Cub Scout meeting.
Santana feels like the Twins have 'dissed' him, and a start against Pedro might be a little extra incentive for Johann to crank it up a notch. I like the Twins bullpen to come thru for Santana, and Boston's to falter once again for Pedro.
