Alomar retiring? Cantu starting?

Postby hybrid » Sat Mar 19, 2005 2:01 am

Hey guys, I know it isn't huge news cause neither are worth much fantasy wise. Though if your in a deep league and could use a sleeper, Cantu could be developing into a nice one. Most people thought he would get a shot whenever Alomar would get hurt, but it looks like he could start the year for the Rays.

I was at the Rays game tonight, and Alomar looked terrible. He commited two errors on plays that were not hard ( a relay throw from LF and a simple double play). Then he got up to bad and K'd with out swinging. Everyone knew something was up when after the 1st, he left the game. Turns out after reading this article....

Alomar could be retiring fairly soon, which I honestly think would be the best for him at this point. There should be an announcement Saturday on his future.

Well this could also be good news for Upton owners in deep leagues. Lugo could shift to 2B and allow Upton to play SS perhaps later in the season. I'm not that up on the situation but it seems like an eventual possibility.

I still don't understand why the Ryas signed Alex Gonzalez. IMO, Upton was ready.

You talk about a guy who's career fell off a cliff the second he wnt to NY? Here was a guy headed to the HOF that just retired at age 37 and who seemed t o lose it completely at age 33.

No, my draft is ruined now! :-D Since this doesn't matter much for fantasy, is Alomar a hall of famer?

Yes, Alomar is a Hall of Famer. Career .300 hitter, just missed 3,000 hits with 2700 and change, but his stellar fielding and all around play in the 90's and up to 2001 make him a sure fire selection. Maybe not first ballot, but he'll get in there.

He was the best 2B in baseball for like a decade after Ryno's drop off and I think only Jeff Kent would've possibly been taken ahead of him.

Or am I wrong?

I think Biggio was slightly better, but their numbers are comparable. Alomar did win a world series, so he has that going for him. Kent is there too but may not get in because he was never considered good defensively.
