Dick Radatz (The Monster) Dead at 67

Postby Pacman » Thu Mar 17, 2005 8:58 am

This may belong in the Red Sox team forum, but Radatz did pitch for other teams in his career, anyway:

Dick Radatz, a big, lumbering powerful relief pitcher known as "The Monster" back in the 1960s, died yesterday after an accident in his Easton, Mass. home. He was 67.

Article

He was before my time, but had a reputation as a fierce, intimidating closer back in his days with the Sox in the early/mid-60s. He's done some local sports talk radio on WEEI over parts of the last 5 or 10 years (when his health allowed) and he was always very entertaining, in a gruff, no-nonsense way.

Again, sorry if this is too Sox-specific for the forum.

I was about to post this myself since I hadn't seen a thread on it. He was given the nickname "The Monster" by Mickey Mantle because in 63 lifetime at bats against Radatz, he struck out 47 times. Pretty amazing. He was a great pitcher and was always always entertaining in his constant appearances on the radio here in Boston.

RIP. :,-(

Yes doctor, I am sick.

Sick of those who are hypocrites.
Yes doctor, an army is forming.
Yes doctor, there will be a war.

Radatz was certainly a tremendous pitcher. Does anybody know offhand if his 31 relief wins over two seasons are still a record?

A shame he wasn't still in Boston in '67...
