Best value in round 2

After conducting a number of mock drafts the hardest pick for me is always round 2.

Some picks that come to mind are Crawford, Rolen, Beltre and Schmidt. Obviously if an Abreu or a Helton slip you're set. But where do you go otherwise? I think Schmidt may be the best value.
He could produce close to the level of Johnson and Santana. I believe he's the only other top tier starter.

Assuming a 5x5 roto league who are some of your favorite round two picks and why?

Crawford, Sheff, Beltre, and Sheets I'd say.

On the other hand, round 2 busts: Rolen, Teix, Ortiz, and Thome.

I don't care what anyone says, 48 HR's in Chavez Revine is not a fluke. All those RBI's in that crappy Dodger lineup? Imagine what he'll do with Ichiro, Reed, Sexson, Boone.

And since I saw it mentioned in another thread, don't even consider taking M-Cab in the 2nd. He's not that good yet, don't waste an early pick on him. People go crazy over Teix and Cabrera because they're young but that also means they're volatile and unproven. I can't believe anybody would consider thsoe two over Sheff and Beltre. And even Edmonds.

Ichiro: will be gold, anywhere in the second round.

He can't control his plate this year, he'll get too many shots to the head when he goes up to bat

Can't go wrong with Schmidt if you want grab a SP. Crawford mid-to late 2nd is a good pick also imo. Suzuki is more a round 3 player to me.

Would not touch Beltre round 2 with the depth at 3b and his contract year epiphany. Rolen is probably a round 3 guy also. Maybe end of round 2 depending on how things go.

Would not take Sheets or any other SP round 2 except for maybe Schilling at the end of the 2nd (if he was fully healthy).

Then there is Sheff who is an OK pick also.

For the 2nd round go for Bonds if he's available.

I don't believe in contract years.. Contract years don't alter your ability to hit the ball.

Contract years work for players like JD Drew, who put in 100% effort, and don't sit out with minor injuries like other years, to get their paycheck. But Beltre, he's always had talent, but he's never put it together. Not that he sat out stupid injuries, or didn't give effort.

Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez, who are both better hitters than Nomar. But you're right, he has to prove he's still a star. So why draft him in the third round like he's the Nomar of 2003?
