Mark Prior: Elbow Inflammation Sidelines Prior

RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Monday, March 14, 2005
Update: Prior will miss his next spring start Tuesday because of inflammation in his elbow, which developed after his first outing, the Cubs' Website reports.

Recommendation: Prior, who did not pitch until June last year because of problems with his Achilles and elbow, had an MRI exam done Sunday on his right elbow. "There is no damage to the ligament and no damage to the ulnar nerve", Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. Cubs trainer Mark O'Neal said that Prior's MRI showed the symptoms were different than what the right-hander experienced last spring with his elbow. The problem now, O'Neal said, is inflammation in the joint and some irritation to the ulnar nerve. "We have to let those medications take effect, and basically the nerve and the inflammation will dictate when we can proceed," O'Neal said. Prior will not throw at least until Wednesday, and that would be on the side. More word on Prior when we get it, but for now, bump him down a couple spots on your cheatsheets just to be on the safe side.

:-o Doesn't sound good

I agree with their recommendation to bump him down, but i certainly wouldnt let a little inflammation turn me off, i spent a second round pick on this guy, and im not about to go looking for a trade if there's no real damage there. If it turns out he's going to miss significant time then ill seriously consider a trade, but yeh, im definatly only gonna bump him for now, but im certainly gonna keep him on the roster.

MRI is negative and it's probably a nerve issue which works itself out. This has nothing to do with his elbow last season and is simple in comparison.

Look - this is normal preseason bang-up junk on getting the arm ready for a 7 inning (average) game. He's going to be fine and only a fool would drop him off his radar and a dingleberry would lower him anywhere past a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

My advise - keep him high and sell him off for a bundle mid season.

Recurring arm problems?

Postby jabny » Wed Mar 16, 2005 10:26 pm

I love when the trainer says that this new arm problem has nothing to do with last season. Of course it does! What else can he say? And Jose Reyes doesn't have bum legs anymore because he is having a good spring. C'mon.

When he pitches he is a great pitcher. But he seems to have more aches and pains than most pitchers, and between the Cubs and Dusty Baker, neither is well known for handling pitchers properly. If you haven't drafted already, take a powder on the guy and let him be someone elses headache. A 2nd round pick for a guy who gets 15-20 starts a season is a waste.
Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint.
