Latest Drafted Team, Advice Please...

Postby northjersey78 » Mon Mar 14, 2005 2:35 pm

Well, I managed to miss this draft and Yahoo auto-drafted for me - 12 team H2H league:

C R. Hernandez (SD - C)
1B C. Delgado (Fla - 1B)
2B J. Kent (LAD - 2B)
3B A. Rodriguez (NYY - 3B)
SS N. Garciaparra (ChC - SS)
OF M. Cabrera (Fla - OF)
OF J. Damon (Bos - OF)
OF H. Matsui (NYY - OF)
Util M. Young (Tex - SS)
BN A. Sanchez (Det - OF)
BN M. Lieberthal (Phi - C)

SP R. Harden (Oak - SP)
SP J. Affeldt (KC - SP,RP)
RP D. Kolb (Atl - RP)
RP B. Ryan (Bal - RP)
P J. Mesa (Pit - RP)
P R. Lopez (Bal - SP,RP)
P A. Leiter (Fla - SP)
BN B. Lawrence (SD - SP)
BN M. Hampton (Atl - SP)
BN D. Lowe (LAD - SP)

This is what was auto-drafted. Obviously needing some starting pitching help, I have already trade Michael Young for Roy Oswalt. This will allow me to keep Nomar at SS and get a top flight starter in Oswalt. So now my team looks like this:

C R. Hernandez (SD - C)
1B C. Delgado (Fla - 1B)
2B J. Kent (LAD - 2B)
3B A. Rodriguez (NYY - 3B)
SS N. Garciaparra (ChC - SS)
OF M. Cabrera (Fla - OF)
OF J. Damon (Bos - OF)
OF H. Matsui (NYY - OF)
UTI A. Sanchez (Det - OF)
BN M. Lieberthal (Phi - C)

SP R. Oswalt (Hou - SP)
SP R. Harden (Oak - SP)
RP D. Kolb (Atl - RP)
RP B. Ryan (Bal - RP)
P J. Mesa (Pit - RP)
P R. Lopez (Bal - SP,RP)
P A. Leiter (Fla - SP)
BN B. Lawrence (SD - SP)
BN M. Hampton (Atl - SP)
BN D. Lowe (LAD - SP)
BN J. Affeldt (KC - SP,RP)

I still have plenty of offense to spare. Also, I was offered Carolos Zambrano straight up for Danny Kolb. Do you think I still need to make that trade to get another quality starter? I'm worried about saves, but I have a stud in Lidge and Ryan and Mesa should be the full time closer for thier teams. Not sure what to make of Affeldt, I've heard he will be the full time closer in KC. Any suggestions?

i would drop kolb for c. zambrano any day. you'll be fine on saves. And did you say you did have lidge? because i didn't see you list him. but either way. As i'm sure you know kolb only stuck out it hink 21 people last year. see if mike adams is available on waivers or someone like that. and make trade for zambrano. remember saves is only one category

also if there's a decent 1b available morneau, casey konerko even bagwell. i see him at best putting up 37-100-285 and i feel like his percieved value is a lot higher than that. you rpobably drafted him in the first five rounds. see if you can get anything decent for him. it's just a matter of opinion though.

Woops - that was another league where I have Lidge. I only have the relievers listed there, which is why I am hesitating on the Zambrano for Kolb trade.

I would go for it. That's a great upgrade. If you're winning the other four pitching categories, you could always grab saves from the waiver wire or get a solid lead in the others and trade an SP when you have a cushion.

It all depends on how you feel about Zambrano. If you think he's going to raise his level to near stud status this year, than you should definitely pull the trigger.

It's weird because I just noticed he took Zambrano in the 6th round, now wants to trad eme straight up for a guy I got in the 10th.

I'm a little weary of pulling the trigger, though - because I think Kolb will be a stud in Atlanta. I think Zambrano will have another solid year, but don't know if he'll be the same he was last year. And the only relievers that leaves me with are BJ Ryan and Jose Mesa - depnding on whether Affeldt becomes the closer.

Kolb should post solid save numbers, but he has downsides and risks:
1. Not a high k guy, so he'll only really help you in saves
2. Maybe Smoltz can't handle starting, so he goes back to closing.

Zambrano is a high k guy who should, at a minimum, help you in WHIP, K, and ERA, and I can't imagine him hurting you in wins. Even if he doesnt' become a stud, he's a very solid starter.

If you think you can't rely on the wire to cover saves, than I guess you want to keep Kolb, but I'd say you're probably below average in all pitching categories right now, so improving in at least three, and possibly four, is nice.

One more thing. There is no way you're going to win saves anyway, right? Someone out there must have a couple of stud closers. Take a look at the other teams and see what place you think you'd end up. If losing Kolb drops you from 4 to 6, but gaining Zambrano can up you to third or fourth from seventh in the four others, it would be a no brainer.

Thanks for the advice - I accepted the trade. I will now have Oswalt and Zambrano at the front of my starting pitching. Between Harden, Lowe, Hampton and Laurence I think I should get some halfway decent production. But yeah, I'm probably screwed in saves anyway. And Kolb gets NO strikeouts.

I'll probably do what I did last year - scour the news for someone who wil lstep in and be the closer. I did it last year and nabbed Joe Nathon and Brad Lidge off of waivers before they blew up. Hopefully the same thing will happen this year.
