"The vendor who sold the cassava balls insisted nothing was wrong with them and ate a few to prove the point. Now she, too, is in critical condition."

What an idiot. Did she think it was some ploy to get her fired, that all these people weren't actually getting sick?

And I agree, why would you eat something that is made of cyanide and requires enough cooking to get rid of it? And why would you trust a stranger to make it for you?

Who was the guy that figured out how long it had to be cooked in order to eat? After the first guy dropped I would have left it alone. :-D

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

My mom makes casava cake and its really good...I had no idea it could be poisonous in some states. I guess she gets it pre-cooked already to put in the dessert.

Cassava is a starchy, tuberous root that is a low-cost source of carbohydrates in humid, tropical areas; it is also the source of tapioca.

Interesting tidbit of info there. :-?

Sorry to hear about the kids though. They didn't know any better. :,-(

Thats pretty sad, you would think that if you are dealing with a potentially-fatal food you would take care to make sure it was cooked well. :,-(

Actually it can be poisonous in all states, but most with the exception of Alabama have stiff enough food regulations that rarely do cases of cyanide poisoning ever occur in the USA.
