I have broadband, but there hasnt been a noticeable increase in speed after changing the settings. The cafe site already loads very quickly. BTW, I think we had a thread about it, but still good

To dumb it down completely, if you are running Firefox, it makes it much faster.

I never have a problem with ads unless I am looking at topic replies in AOL.

I have cable as well and I noticed much quicker loads with this adjustment.
here are a couple additions to that tweak from one of my fav places on the net http://www.tweakguides.com. great site for xp tweaking and fps gaming tweaks (for certain games.) this guy is the best most of it is the same but you tweak a few more things and itll make it even better.
Note: you will have to create this last entry by right-clicking on the config screen, selecting New>Integer and entering the name "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" then assigning a value of 0.

The ads generally aren't a problem, its just a nicer experience one they're gone, like the stupid banner ads "urging you to kiss brad pitt or something" at the top of this website.

Understood although it is those stupid banner ads that keep this place free for all to use. I would much rather click on Brad's mug than have to cut Menyak a check.

I understand that as well and thought about it. The extension simply makes it so those ads, that I will never click on anyway, aren't in my vision. If I'm not going to click it anyway, in the end it doesn't hurt the banner ads people.

Should I do these too? I'm worried about doing too much. (Or doing something wrong... )

Welcome to the wonderful world of open-source. Firefox Extension to fix the phpBB smilie/highlight problem.
