Petit deal

Postby oakiedragon » Thu Mar 03, 2005 11:26 pm

would you do this minors deal?
I give Yusmerio Petit and pick 5.20
I get Edwin Encarnacion and Pick 3.5
Should i do this deal, i have a lot of depth at P and need a good minor league 3b (i also have randa so it would be a nice benefit to just plug in encarnacion when randa was done) Also I get an upgrade in draft pick.
My only concern is I like petit's numbers so far. But he hasnt really pitched outside of A ball except for a breif stint in AA when he didnt fair to well. His stuff is also not that dominating, he seems to get his K's because of the movement on his pitches and some apparent deception in his delivery. Do you think he will be a top pitcher and i should keep him, or should i do this deal. Thanks

Keep Petit. Lots of pitchers have trouble moving to double-A. It's the biggest jump in the minors. And he only pitched 12 innings there, striking out 16.

Give him a chance.

I would do that deal in a heartbeat. I've never seen him pitch but most of what I've read about Petit says that there's no way he can continue his success in the majors. His stuff just isn't that good. Encarnacion, on the other hand, has a very good chance of becoming the Reds everyday 3B by the end of this season. He won't be a superstar, but he is very solid nonetheless. Randa certainly won't stand in his way for very long.

Personally I like Petit more, so far he has pitched great. But it kind of depends what you could get in the 3rd rd compared to the 5 rd also, if it's a big jump in talent it might be worth it.

I saw Edwin the other day and he looked pretty good, Petit has just been more impressive.

I'm sure someone will find this interesting, found it on RotoWorld.com

"A high-tech lab in Birmingham, Alabama, revealed why batters have so many problems hitting Yusmeiro Petit, even though he doesn't reach 90 mph.
The slow-motion cameras, which take pictures more than 16 times faster than a standard video recorder, showed that Petit manages to keep the ball hidden longer than other pitchers. Petit finished second in the minors in strikeouts last season with 200."

Petit's overrated and I'd trade him (his stuff just isn't spectacular), so I'd hype his stats and move him. However, you can do much better than EE.
