How to improve. WHIR

Postby beisbol4ever94928 » Mon Jan 28, 2013 4:30 pm

So, as my mini draft draws to a close and I am likely going to fill out my roster with prospects and role players. I could definitely use help in my bullpen.

16 teams h2h dynasty league. Salary but no auction.

Here is my roster:

C- Doumit (800k)
1B- Billy Butler (6/6/6/6 +7.5m option)
2B- Brandon Phillips (8/10/10)
3B- Brett Lawrie (10/10/10/10/10)
SS- Zack Cozart (600k/800k/1m/1.2m/1.5m)
LF- Nelson Cruz (10/10/10/10)
CF- Josh Hamilton (11/11/11/11)
RF- Jayson Werth (6/6/6)

Others (One will be Utility): David Freese (5/5/5/5), Nick Swisher (5/5/5), Starline Marte (600k/800k/1m/1.2m/1.5m), Justin Morneau (3/3/3 plus 3.75 option), Tyler Pastornicky (600k/800k/1m/1.2m/1.5m)

SP: Justin Verlander (16/16/16), Cliff Lee (14/14/114/14 +15.75m option), Greinke (10/10/10/10), Lincecum (12/12/12/15), Jake Peavy (2/2), Kyle Lohse (1.4m), Alex Ogando (3/3), Zach McAllister (400k/600k/800k/1m/1.2m/1.5m)

RP:Jose Valverde (6/6), Rafael betancourt (5), JJ Putz (6/6)

So here are my questions:

1) Who of those listed as "others" should I use as my primary Utility? I like Freese and Swisher. Swisher can also play 1B and RF, so I have more flexibility with him, but I like Freese a lot too. My thinking is, I could move one of them in a trade to help out somewhere.

2) I could move Hamilton to LF and plug in CF with Marte. Nelson Cruz could either move to Utility allowing me to trade one of, or both, Freese and Swisher. Or, I could put Cruz on the trading block.

3) Cozart has been receiving a lot of interest and I have pretty much been hesitant to move him because I am unsure of Pastornicky and no potential deals. They both have nice contracts. How much of a downgrade would Pastornicky be over Cozart? If not that big of a downgrade, should I move Cozart for prospects?

4) What is my biggest need? Relief?

5) Any and all suggestions welcomed and appreciated.

6) How would you rate my team as it currently is for a 16 team league?

your team looks great as is, you'll figure out your utility as you go, but you've got options galore. I certainly wouldn't trade Cozart; not seeing much playing time for Pastornicky. Maybe you could trade Freese for a better RF perhaps, your pitching looks fine to me and I wouldn't be in a hurry to make any major changes

I'm a biased big fan of Freese and Cardinals in fantasy, so if it were me I would dangle Lawrie and that contract and keep Freese at half the price. If you can get a big upgrade at any other position for Lawrie I'd go that route. SP looks solid

First off, I would move Hamilton to LF, Marte to CF and put Cruz on the block. At the very least, see what you can get for him. Out of your utility players, I like Freese the most as well. As the previous poster mentioned, I would also float Lawrie's name in trade talks. While I believe that Lawrie has a great deal of upside, you may be able to get someone to pony up something real nice for him. But I definitely wouldn't trade him to just trade him. If you trade Cruz or Lawrie, Swisher should be a good fill in for whatever spot you need.

Do not trade Cozart if Pastornicky is your immediate and only backup to him. If you trade someone like Lawrie or Cruz, try to get a shortstop or upgrade over Werth. Relief is a need for your team, but I wouldn't say it's a big need. Betancourt and Putz should be suitable for the immediate future, but trying to get a couple of young bullpen arms with some upside would be a good idea. Valverde is done and I don't see someone taking his contract off your hands, so you will be stuck with that albatross for the reminder of his contract it looks like. I do think that he will sign somewhere and likely be the setup guy, so he will have a few saves and holds in him, but he won't be the guy anywhere (IMO).

You have a good team for a 16 team league. You got three excellent pitcher for your rotation, along with a couple of decent ones. I would look at the shortstop market to see what is out there, especially for a capable backup to Cozart. But as for this year, I don't see any glaring holes that would stop you from being competitive. Health is likely going to be your biggest issue, especially on a team that has Hamilton & Cruz.

Thanks for your help on mine.

Thanks for all the advice. I have just agreed in principle on trading Freese. I am getting Trevor Bauer plus a third round draft pick for him. Was that a good deal for me? Normally I take more time to consider trades, and even though I don't need SP, the value and upside of Bauer seemed to good to pass up. Bauer's contract is (400k/600k/800k/1m/1.2m/1.5m).

Look Valverde is considering retirement. Drop him I dont' care if you have to take the penalty for him ( I mean absorb his contract )

Definitely look to acquire a SS for sure.
