Books to read before you die

Postby Mookie4ever » Fri Nov 30, 2012 4:50 pm

My son is now devouring all books and I am putting together a list for him of books to read. Please add:

Day of the Triffids - Wyndam
A prayer for Owen Meany, Hotel New Hampshire, World According to Garp - Irving
Hitchihikers guide to the galaxy and Dirk Gently - Adams
Grapes of Wrath - Steinbeck
1984 - Orwell
Brave new world - Huxley
Lord of the Flies - Golding
Catch 22 - Heller
Catcher in the Rye - Salinger
To kill a mockingbird - Harper Lee
Uncle Toms Cabin - Stowe
Stranger in a strange land - Heinlein
Left Hand of Darkness - LeGuin
A canticle for Leibowitz - ?
Heart of Darkness - Conrad
The Hobbit

getting all of these in hardcover so they will last and I can read them along with him.
Please add yours to the list.

Some of my favorite already listed

Ender's Game
The Road (not sure how old he is that might be kind of dark)
Animal Farm
The Great Gatsby
The Natural
Anything by Kurt Vonnegut.
The Illustrated Man
Fahrenheit 451
The Martian Chronicles
A Clockwork Orange
The Handmaid's Tale
Ball Four
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
World War Z
The Princess Bride
The Hunger Games

I'll have to check my bookshelf to see if I missed a great one.

Yes it is and I'm not a fan of zombie books. If you liked it you should check out Robocalypse. Similar but with robots instead of zombies. Not as good as WWZ IMO but still fun.

Love the Orson Scott Card.
I vetoed the Hunger Games because it would freak him out. Can throw Fear and Loathing and Clockwork Orange in this group.
Fahrentheit 451 sucked. One of the very small handful of books that I started reading and did not finish.
Read the Road. Too dreary. No Country was good.
Was not crazy about the Martian Chronicles or any Vonnegut.
Will add Gatsby and Animal Farm to the list.

Is On the Road really that great?
I mean it was a'ight I guess but I kept waiting for something to happen. Kind of like Stephen King without the rabid dog or possessed car.

Don't know much about the civil war is awesome - read it 3 times. But that is non-fiction so off the list.
