Wednesday’s Wide World of Waivers: End of Season Review
(by Chris Routledge)

Welcome to the final waiver column of 2009. Hopefully you’re reading this as champion of your league, and if a suggestion or two from this column helped, so much the better! For myself, I won one league (a 16-team dynasty) finished runner-up in a couple more, but finally relinquished my H2HWS title after four straight years of success. C’est la vie …

Anyway, as we settle back to enjoy the post-season (once again without my beloved Mets, although at least this year I knew they were done well before the final day!), here’s a final review of the waiver wire selections from Tom and myself, picking up from where we left off (June 10th). [More]

Dead Weight: Hitters
(by Cary James)

Everyone has their favorite fantasy hitters. Now that the 2009 regular season closed up shop, I’d like to look ahead to 2010 to help us all avoid drafting the next Carlos Beltran or Lance Berkman. [More]

Hot/Cold 2009 Finale: A Look Toward 2010
(by Ray Flores)

Welcome back to the Hot/Cold, which best describes your feelings about the end of the regular season and especially the end of the road for this column in 2009. Like I hinted last week, today is practically graduation day and school’s out for the winter, which makes it a good time to crack open the Dom Perignon as we make a toast to the 2009 season and to the Dodgers, who finally did the business of wrapping up the NL West pennant (and home field advantage in the NL playoffs). For those of us who are looking far ahead to better days from a disappointing fantasy baseball season (like yours truly, oddly enough), we’ll look forward to 2010. We’ll look at a few select players who have outproduced their value this season and to get some idea if they can sustain this year’s roaring success for a higher draft price next year. We’ll also spotlight a few players who haven’t produced to expectation and as a possible result, their perceived value figures to take a hit for next season’s drafts; we’ll see if they’ll make for fine bargain draft targets. Because I’ve been sick for the better part of a week since coming home from Las Vegas and all I had was chicken soup on the mind, I’m calling the first group of players as “Hot Soup” because their stock or value will likely be hot for next year and the second group, “Cold Bouillon Cubes”. Alright then, onto this last bit of business… [More]

Dead Weight: Pitchers
(by Cary James)

It’s the end of the fantasy season, so let’s take stock of this season’s draft busts and see how they will influence your draft next season. I contend that paying early for starters or closers is too risky a proposition. For every Roy Halladay or Mariano Rivera, there are Ervin Santana’s or Brad Lidge’s waiting to blow up. Let’s take stock and see what we learned. [More]

Sleeper of the Week
(by R.J. White)

Still looking for sleepers this deep into the season? I have a decent one for you — Willie Bloomquist. No, I’m not joking. Bloomquist has — hey, stop laughing. Bloomquist has been a stolen-base threat all season, swiping 21 bags in 27 tries in 2009. Though most of his thievery came before the halfway point of the season, Bloomquist has stolen three bases this month, but the reason you’ll want to sit up and take notice is his stunning average lately. [More]

Sleeper of the Week
(by R.J. White)

You probably didn’t notice this, but there’s a starting pitcher available in most leagues that has a 0.00 ERA over the last month — and no, it’s not someone that hasn’t played. This guy has a 1.71 ERA and 0.76 WHIP since the All-Star break, posting over a K an inning in the process. Intrigued? I’d be too. These numbers are a bit skewed, as he’s only made two starts over his 31.2 post-All Star innings, but it’s plain to see: give Robinson Tejeda the ball, and he’ll get people out. [More]

Sleeper of the Week
(by R.J. White)

Ah, September is in the air. For most of the fantasy world, this means we dive headfirst into football, focusing almost all of our attention on winning that Week 1 contest. But September also brings a bunch of wet-behind-the-ears kids to the majors, as rosters expand and teams add players they either think will help them with a playoff push or think could help them next year. One such call-up is Cleveland Indians OF Michael Brantley. [More]

Sleeper of the Week
(by R.J. White)

After Aubrey Huff was recently traded to Detroit, some playing time opened up in Baltimore. Former Cub Felix Pie has been given another shot at proving he belongs in the majors, and at long last it looks like he’s making the most of the opportunity. Pie has started 10 of Baltimore’s last 12 games; in that time frame, he’s brought his average up nearly 30 points to .272. His slugging percentage has also shot through the roof, as he’s hit four homers in his last seven games. [More]

Cafe Positional Rankings: Week 25
(by Bryan Freilich)

Enjoy the Week 25 rankings and as always, if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, don’t hesitate to post in the forums or e-mail us at fbcmailbag@gmail.com. Note that this will be our last ranking of 2009. If you want to be part of the ranking team this off-season and help shape the Cafe’s 2010 rankings, give us a holler. [More]

Cafe Positional Rankings: Week 24
(by R.J. White)

Fantasy baseball has just about wound down, but the MLB season is heating up. Yankees, Phillies, Angels, Dodgers, Red Sox, Rockies, Tigers, Cardinals. Who you got? Because that’s the real discussion topic at this point in September. Of course, since Bryan and I love giving you guys something to talk about, we’re still churning out some fantasy rankings for your perusal and (hopefully) enjoyment. I posted my thoughts on how the preseason rankings will look in 2010 earlier this week. If you want to be part of the ranking team this off-season and help shape the Cafe’s 2010 rankings, give me a holler. You can post in the comment section or send me a private message in the forums. [More]

Cafe Positional Rankings: Week 23
(by Bryan Freilich)

Enjoy the Week 23 rankings and as always, if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, don’t hesitate to post in the forums or e-mail us at fbcmailbag@gmail.com. [More]

I hope all you Cafe members are destroying the non-Cafe members in your leagues. You can still reach us at fbcmailbag@gmail.com with any questions, even this late in the season. [More]

The Can of Corn – Show 25 – End-of-season Awards Show
(by Michael Stephens)

Welcome to The Can of Corn, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! For better or worse, there’s only three days left in the fantasy season for the select few lucky enough to make it to title week, so while most of you are waiting for the real-life playoffs and wondering who to plug into your fantasy football lineup this Sunday, the guys at the C.o.C. thought they’d take some time to reflect on all things 2009 regular season! In this show we have our fantasy all-star teams, MVPs, rookies of the year and surprises/disappointments (filled with names you should put on your list now and watch for next season), as well as updates on over 20 of our regular-season Hot Corner prop bets and final Battle of the Wits standings! It’s been a great year for the Can of Corn, and we couldn’t do it without you, the listeners! We’d like to extend a big “thank you” to all of you, and we’ll see you next season! [More]

The Can of Corn – Show 24
(by Michael Stephens)

Welcome to The Can of Corn, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! Only one more week left til the season comes to a close, and that means this is the last real episode of the Can of Corn (save your tears for show 25 though, please)! This is the final week for lineup changes, and chances are you are either in the stretch run for your roto league, in the final week of your title quest in H2H or you have thrown in the towel and hopped on the football bandwagon (which is fine with us, we have a football show you can check out too!). We have news on all things baseball this week, from pertinent injury news, to top rookie performers, to Cafe Talk, so tune in for more of our usual weekly content, as well as a new award at the end of the show – it’s time to grab your glove and head for the outfield, because here comes The Can of Corn! [More]

The Can of Corn – Show 23
(by Michael Stephens)

Welcome to The Can of Corn, hosted by Michael Stephens! Well, it’s time for the second solo flight of the year! With a limited “staff” this week, I still wanted to get a show out there for the loyal listeners (who are hopefully in the thick of their playoff races!) so they can have that little bit of extra help with injury news, rookie watch and hot/cold hitters to propel them into the ultimate fantasy glory this season! There isn’t any Cafe Talk this week, but along with all the aforementioned segments, I also made sure to update any/all Hot Corner situations and the Battle of the Wits, so this 11 minutes is jam-packed with pertinent playoff information for you – it’s time to grab your glove and head for the outfield, because here comes The Can of Corn! [More]

Welcome to The Can of Corn, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! It smells like October! Well, the October of fantasy baseball season at least! We’ve reached the time of year where lineup decisions are even more gut wrenching and injuries are devastating – there is no time more important than now to keep on top of your roster and player news and to make all the right moves to advance to the second week of the playoffs, so we hope you choose to turn to our Rookie Watch, injury updates, Cafe Talk and e-mail analysis for the advice you need to inch closer to your league’s championship! It’s time to grab your glove and head for the outfield, because here comes The Can of Corn! [More]

Welcome to the Fantasy Baseball Cafe!

We hope you'll enjoy this site and make us your first choice for free tips, updates, discussion, and maybe even a bit of humor during the 2009 fantasy baseball season. Whether you're the commissioner of a long-running roto keeper league or looking for rankings for your very first draft, Fantasy Baseball Cafe will provide you with all the information you're looking for.

At the Fantasy Baseball Cafe, you'll find features such as Cheat Sheets, weekly Sleepers, Articles from an outstanding lineup of baseball writers, Links to other fantasy baseball resources, free games such as Pick3 and Trivia Time Trial, and a whole lot more. Above all, we look forward to seeing you in our Fantasy Baseball Forums for talk about everything from the latest updates to rules issues.

Oh yes - why call a fantasy baseball site a cafe? Aside from the fact that our addiction to fantasy sports is more serious than most caffeine dependencies, a cafe is just the place to meet people and exchange opinions, pick up the latest news, and relax for a little while. You'll have to provide the cappuccino yourself, but we won't be charging $4.89 a cup either: this cafe will be absolutely free.

All the best for a successful and fun 2009 fantasy baseball season,
Welcome back to Wednesday’s Wide World of Waivers. Last week Chris put forward four very good pickups to keep in mind for those keeper/dynasty leagues. This week I’ll be recommending four players to grab off waivers to give you a head start on your 2010 season. Obviously, they will all be better than Chris’ picks because I’m not a Mets fan. :) [More]

Welcome to The Can of Corn, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! Man, what is the deal with all of these post-deadline deals? And who the heck is “player to be named later”? With the playoffs (fantasy and reality) quickly approaching, general managers and fantasy owners alike are scrambling to put together the best possible roster for the optimum postseason success, is there a better way to achieve this success than with a healthy dose of Rookie Watch, injury updates and Cafe Talk? There simply isn’t one as far as we’re concerned, so grab your glove and head for the outfield – here comes The Can of Corn! [More]

From goat back to great, thus is the story of John Smoltz circa 2009. Anyone that had Smoltz on their team for his work in Boston would tell you the 42-year-old pitcher was just awful after he compiled a 2-5 record, 8.32 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. I myself was suckered in, pointing to his excellent K/BB ratio (he allowed no more than one walk in seven of his eight Boston starts). Boston cut ties with the former World Series MVP, and the Cardinals, like so many fantasy owners this season, decided to hop on the Smoltz Express. [More]
