Welcome back to the Hot/Cold, which best describes your feelings about the end of the regular season and especially the end of the road for this column in 2009. Like I hinted last week, today is practically graduation day and school’s out for the winter, which makes it a good time to crack open the Dom Perignon as we make a toast to the 2009 season and to the Dodgers, who finally did the business of wrapping up the NL West pennant (and home field advantage in the NL playoffs). For those of us who are looking far ahead to better days from a disappointing fantasy baseball season (like yours truly, oddly enough), we’ll look forward to 2010. We’ll look at a few select players who have outproduced their value this season and to get some idea if they can sustain this year’s roaring success for a higher draft price next year. We’ll also spotlight a few players who haven’t produced to expectation and as a possible result, their perceived value figures to take a hit for next season’s drafts; we’ll see if they’ll make for fine bargain draft targets. Because I’ve been sick for the better part of a week since coming home from Las Vegas and all I had was chicken soup on the mind, I’m calling the first group of players as “Hot Soup” because their stock or value will likely be hot for next year and the second group, “Cold Bouillon Cubes”. I contend that paying early for starters or closers is too risky a proposition. For every Roy Halladay or Mariano Rivera, there are Ervin Santana’s or Brad Lidge’s waiting to blow up. Still looking for sleepers this deep into the season? I have a decent one for you — Willie Bloomquist. No, I’m not joking. Bloomquist has — hey, stop laughing. Bloomquist has been a stolen-base threat all season, swiping 21 bags in 27 tries in 2009. Though most of his thievery came before the halfway point of the season, Bloomquist has stolen three bases this month, but the reason you’ll want to sit up and take notice is his stunning average lately. You probably didn’t notice this, but there’s a starting pitcher available in most leagues that has a 0.00 ERA over the last month — and no, it’s not someone that hasn’t played. This guy has a 1.71 ERA and 0.76 WHIP since the All-Star break, posting over a K an inning in the process. Intrigued? I’d be too. These numbers are a bit skewed, as he’s only made two starts over his 31.2 post-All Star innings, but it’s plain to see: give Robinson Tejeda the ball, and he’ll get people out. [More]

Ah, September is in the air. For most of the fantasy world, this means we dive headfirst into football, focusing almost all of our attention on winning that Week 1 contest. But September also brings a bunch of wet-behind-the-ears kids to the majors, as rosters expand and teams add players they either think will help them with a playoff push or think could help them next year. After Aubrey Huff was recently traded to Detroit, some playing time opened up in Baltimore. Former Cub Felix Pie has been given another shot at proving he belongs in the majors, and at long last it looks like he’s making the most of the opportunity. Pie has started 10 of Baltimore’s last 12 games; in that time frame, he’s brought his average up nearly 30 points to .272. His slugging percentage has also shot through the roof, as he’s hit four homers in his last seven games. [More]

Fantasy baseball has just about wound down, but the MLB season is heating up. Yankees, Phillies, Angels, Dodgers, Red Sox, Rockies, Tigers, Cardinals. Who you got? Because that’s the real discussion topic at this point in September. From goat back to great, thus is the story of John Smoltz circa 2009. Anyone that had Smoltz on their team for his work in Boston would tell you the 42-year-old pitcher was just awful after he compiled a 2-5 record, 8.32 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. I myself was suckered in, pointing to his excellent K/BB ratio (he allowed no more than one walk in seven of his eight Boston starts). Boston cut ties with the former World Series MVP, and the Cardinals, like so many fantasy owners this season, decided to hop on the Smoltz Express. [More]
