Dynasty Buy: Jesse Biddle

By brentameyer

As the Phillies rotation gets older, they are going to be needing some replacements before long. One of the top arms they have in the minors is Jessie Biddle. Biddle is currently pitching for Double-A Reading. He’s had a few nice games this year, if you like 16 strikeouts in one game and another game with 10 strikeouts and one hit allowed.

Biddle was drafted by the Phillies 27th overall in the 2010 draft. In his first few years in the minors, he’s gotten off to slow starts and said he really wanted to work harder this year to improve upon that. Well, so far he’s done that and more.
“Every year I feel I will be able to pace myself better and be more ready for the season,” the 21-year-old told the Philadelphia Inquirer last week. “The last two Aprils I haven’t been quite where I need to be for the workload that is going to happen, so right now that is where I am trying to be, and I feel like I am starting to figure that out.”

I believe the young lefty would already be pitching for the Phillies if not for some control problems. In 42 innings so far this year, he’s allowed 20 walks. He’s only allowed 21 hits. I guess the troubling sign about the walks is that he’s been pretty steady over his three-year minor league career. The highest opponents have hit against him in any full season was .241. So I guess he’s been effectively wild. Perhaps Lou Brown should get this kid some black rims?

He won’t turn 22 until October, so he has time to get the control more under wraps. Even he continues at his current pace, he could pitch like Wandy Rodriguez did from 2009 to 2011. He walked a fair amount of batters, but also struck out a chunk to get him out of some tough jams. But I believe he will be better than Rodriguez down the road. The Phillies will need him to put it all together to replace their old guns.
