2013 Fantasy Baseball Rankings, Early January Edition - 29 comments

By R.J. White

Here is the first set of rankings from me for 2013. Fair warning: I didn’t consult any existing sets of rankings, so there’s a chance several things you’re about to see are way off the consensus. That could be good, but it could also be bad — I may have blinders on where certain players are concerned. Things that look weird to me right off the bat: Albert Pujols third at his position, Brian McCann not ranked as a top-12 catcher, Adrian Gonzalez in the outfield rankings, Jered Weaver and Roy Halladay outside the top-15 at SP, and last, but certainly not least, Jason Grilli as a top-10 closer. Skewer me for those things, and more, in the comments section below.

Nice job! With just a brief once over the only thing I can see that might have been missed is Victor Martinez.

    ReplyReply
  2. User avatar daullaz says:

@J35J: Will he qualify at catcher? I figured he’d only be a DH, like David Ortiz, and didn’t rank either.

    ReplyReply
  3. User avatar Element says:

I am wondering how most sites will handle this. He has been in a lot of rankings thus far, but my CBS league has him only eligible at DH.

Why is Chapman ranked in the SP?

    ReplyReply
  5. User avatar daullaz says:

@JonC0226: Chapman is scheduled to join the rotation, so I ranked him with the starting pitchers. He’ll obviously qualify at RP, but I leave it up to readers to weigh the value of playing a starter in an RP slot based on their league setups.

I’m not completely sure how they handle it when a guy misses a whole year but I would GUESS that he would be eligible where he was last eligible…in 2011 he finished the year being eligible at 1B(6 games started) and C(26 games started). Could be a Genie question though?

Nice work! Compared to other rankings you’re quite down on Dunn this year, which I agree with. Just due to his horrible BA or believe last year was an illusion?

  9. User avatar daullaz says:

I think his HRs will regress a bit, and his average doesn’t look like it has any chance of coming close to a respectable level. He’s going to do more harm than good.

You seem to like Ben Revere a lot, what are you projecting from him this year?

I like the early rankings! One guy who struck me as really soured upon in these rankings is Sandoval. Worse than Prado and H.Ramirez? Hmmmm … however, I do like the faith in Cliff Lee. I think he just had an off year and will bounce back easily.

Also: One year ago, S.Hairston over D.Stubbs would have caused a riot. Now, well, there’s at least a discussion!

Probably going to have to move Lance Berkman up after he was tabbed for the third spot in the lineup. Great CI target in leagues, IMO.

  17. Crawdads says:

Headley is a perfect candidate for a positive PED test in 2013 (unless he has Ryan Braun’s Dr….). 27% of his fly balls were HRs. That makes Pujols (best ever HR/FB was 21%) and Joey Bats (best ever HR/FB was 23% during 54HR season) look pretty average.

So, draft him in a shallow league where you can reload after the 1H positive PED test, but he won’t be cheap…

    ReplyReply
  20. User avatar daullaz says:

@murmp2: I think he’ll be a little better than he was in 2012, but I don’t expect him to reach 2011’s numbers.

Expecting big things from Coco this year huh?

    ReplyReply
  22. User avatar daullaz says:

@CyboNinja: I liked his big second half, but you’re right, I’m probably being a little too aggressive with his ranking and that of several speedsters. I’m in a mock draft now and being in that drafting situation with Crisp and several other similar guys available makes me re-evaluate my initial rankings, take notes and adjust for the next set of rankings.

Awesome early 2013 rankings. Thanks. Nice ranking of Chris Sale at #19. Any chance of him busting out into even lower teens. Young, Nice K’s….. Great upside…

    ReplyReply
  24. User avatar daullaz says:

@witmer: I tend to remain cautious with players like him, as breakout seasons tend to be met with some regression. There’s always the chance he takes another step forward, but having gone from 33 2/3 innings in 2010 to 71 innings in 2011 to 192 innings last year, I’m worried how his arm responds this year. He’s probably a guy who I pass on while other reach on that upside.

Nice job with Greg Holland ranked # 9 at RP. With Soria out of the picture, Holland could really put up nice ## with a full season as closer.

Freese at # 13 for your 3B rankings. Are you expecting a lot more than the 20 hrs 70 R and 79 rbi from last year. Tks.

@witmer: I am not, and I’m probably expecting a little less.

  28. Ender says:

I don’t see how Ruiz being more valuable than Lucroy while serving a 25 game suspension to start the year makes much sense. They are about the same guy to begin with only with Lucroy being younger and on a better offense.

Awesome! Ive been eagerly awaiting these rnakings for weeks now.

    Only one qualm:
Did I miss some news on Granderson? I dont see how 26 other OF’s are ahead of him when hes averaged 42 HR, 110 rbi, 114 R, plus double digit steals over the past 2 seasons.
Thats closer to #27 overall than #27 ranked OF imo
