Bottom of the 9th: Giant Issues

By R.J. White

For most of the season, Santiago Casilla has looked like a pretty dominant closer. He ended May with 14 saves in 15 chances and a 1.17 ERA but hit a rough patch near the end of June. It hasn’t gotten any better in July, and Casilla has now blown three of his last four chances. If he was closing for the Cubs or Twins, he might have some more leash, but the Giants are primed to make a playoff run this season, and they can’t get in the habit of giving away wins. Sergio Romo has four saves and 14 holds this year while compiling a 0.75 ERA and 0.75 WHIP, thanks to a 30/7 K/BB ratio and just two earned runs allowed all year. He should be added in all league in anticipation of opening the second half as the team’s closer.

In other news, Matt Capps looks like he could be on his way back after the break, Andrew Bailey may not close when he returns and the Mets are closer shopping.
