Sleeper Watch

By David Bay

After going nine starts without a win, we’ve picked up wins in three of the last four streams, with Michael Pineda helping out on Sunday. The rookie impressed once again, going six strong and only allowing one run. It’s unlikely we’ll ever get the chance to stream him again, since he’ll be leaving the Island of Misfit Toys for fantasy rosters in a league near you, if he hasn’t already, which is a most unfortunate situation since I was enjoying having a day where I didn’t have to analyze a bunch of starters. We’ll have to trudge on without him as we search for gems in a heap of unwanted starters. On to the important stuff:

Michael Pineda (SEA)

Season Totals:

Now on to Tuesday’s streaming options:

Sam LeCure (CIN) vs (ARZ) – 5%

LeCure made our options list in his last start and didn’t disappoint (6 IP, H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K). He faces an aggressive Diamondbacks team that strikes out a lot. They do have power, and that is a little scary in Cincinnati, but LeCure has endured his lively home park in his short career, posting a 3.16 ERA at the Great American Ballpark. He has a strong lineup behind him and a great chance to win.

Jake Westbrook (STL) vs WAS – 4%

I’m still waiting for Westbrook to find his groove so I can start picking him as my streamer. The Cardinal right-hander performed very well last season after making the move from Cleveland (3.48 ERA with STL) He’s had a rough go so far this season but should turn the corner at some point. I’m not ready to trust him yet, but keep your eye out for when he starts posting some quality starts.

Streaming Sleepers Pick:

Phil Coke (DET) @ SEA – 4%

Mr. Soda Pop had a great outing last week in Oakland, much to my chagrin. He allowed only five base runners (3 H, 2 BB) in seven shutout innings. That start was on the heels of a strong first outing against a Royals team that has hit just about everyone. He gets to face a Seattle team that, as always, is struggling to score runs. The Mariners, at .214, are last in American League in batting average and are third to last in runs scored. A hot pitcher plus Safeco and the Mariners should equal a great stream. Plus, if Coke’s Yahoo mugshot doesn’t make you want to stream him, I don’t know what will.
