The Can of Corn – 2010 “Easts” Preview

By Michael Stephens

Welcome to The Can of Corn, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! What a long six months it’s been! Ever heard of Murphy’s Law? We at the CoC have been under its evil rule for way too long this offseason – everything that could have possibly gone wrong on the production end of the show has done so, with a regularity that would stun Mr. Murphy himself! We’ve finally broken through, though, and now we are busting at the seams to share our first of three preseason preview shows with you! Tackling the Eastern divisions of both the American and National Leagues seemed like a logical choice to us, so we’ve broken down those 10 teams in this first show, including the hitters and pitchers we like/don’t like on every team, impact rookies on each squad and also the most likely save vultures out of this pod of teams. If you’re a big fan of Frozen Ropes, The Hot Corner and Battle of the Wits, you’ve have to wait two more weeks for our bread and butter, but in the meantime we have a glut of content coming your way to help you late drafters get all your ducks in a row before the big day! We’ll take the next 10 days or so and get the other two shows out to make amends, but in the meantime, it’s time to grab your glove and head for the outfield, because here comes The Can of Corn!

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Tampa Bay Rays vs Colorado Rockies in Denver

Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays (1:30)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – that Zobrist guy is pretty good
• and those on whom we’re not – a classic example of overvalued power
• Offensive impact rookie – we have a winner!
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – Umm…everyone!
• and those on whom we’re not – that leaves nobody
• Impact rookie pitchers – it’s scary, but they have even more talent in the minors
• Save vultures – these guys should be on your radar with Soriano in town

New York Yankees (6:42)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – Even if he doesn’t go 20/20/20/20 again, it’s a good fit
• and those on whom we’re not – An aging backstop and a few of his friends
• Offensive impact rookies – That aging backstop’s backup
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – Anyone with 200K upside (you know who you are)
• and those on whom we’re not – Everyone else…
• Impact rookie pitchers – Haha, that’s funny!
• Save vultures – Joba the Not?

Boston Red Sox (9:46)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – Everyone but Big Papi and the elder Drew
• and those on whom we’re not – Those two guys, to varying degrees
• Offensive impact rookies – Nobody sticks out for ‘10
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – A cancer survivor, a blister boy and a Riverdancer
• and those on whom we’re not – What the heck is a gyro-ball anyway?
• Impact rookie pitchers – See below
• Save vulture – A young flamethrower with the dreaded “closer-in-waiting” tag

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Ricky Romero throws a pitch against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in New York

Toronto Blue Jays (14:40)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – The only two guys who produced last season
• and those on whom we’re not – Everyone else
• Offensive impact rookies – Two trades is enough, now it’s time to show off
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – A Tommy John comeback
• and those on whom we’re not – Any former top-10 picks on this staff
• Impact rookie pitchers – His dad was good, so that makes him a top prospect, right?
• Save vultures – Bullpen by committee!

Baltimore Orioles (18:18)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – It’s all about the outfield
• and those on whom we’re not – A bad back and a really bad stick (yeah, that’s what she said…)
• Offensive impact rookies – No comprende
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – Two rookies, so TEMPER YOUR EXPECTATIONS!
• and those on whom we’re not – Everyone else on this staff
• Impact rookie pitchers – Those same two guys
• Save vulture – Do you really trust Mike Gonzalez? We trust this guy more.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

New York Metropolitans (20:53)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – Fantasy bounce-back anyone? Eh hem, Mr. Wright? Anyone?
• and those on whom we’re not – Nobody really, just a lot of good and a lot of middle-of-the-road
• Offensive impact rookies – At some point, this guy will realize his potential…or maybe not…who knows?
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – That Johan guy is still pretty darned good…
• and those on whom we’re not – Too bad nobody else on this staff is!
• Impact rookie pitchers – Nope.
• Save vultures – If/when K-Rod’s arm falls off, it could get REALLY ugly

Philadelphia Phillies New York Yankees spring training baseball game

Philadelphia Phillies (24:11)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – You know the names already, so get as many of them as you can!
• and those on whom we’re not – their catcher can’t hit, does that make you feel less dominated?
• Offensive impact rookies – Nobody this year, but who needs rookies anyway?
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – A Doc and a guy who needed one to get his head right
• and those on whom we’re not – Anyone whose nickname was ever “Fatton” or “The Salad Tosser”, etc.
• Impact rookie pitchers – They’re all gone, folks
• Save vulture – You might want to own this guy with Brad-the-headcase-Lidge still in town

Florida Marlins (26:56)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – Lots of production in the top half of this lineup
• and those on whom we’re not – A stud prospect that hasn’t shown us anything yet…
• Offensive impact rookies – Stacked at the corners and in the middle of the outfield, a managers dream!
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – Two “horses”
• and those on whom we’re not – Three donkeys
• Impact rookie pitchers – Crickets…
• Save vulture – This guy’s as good a bet as anyone

Atlanta Braves (30:36)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – A big stick behind the plate and a super sub who gets a full-time gig
• and those on whom we’re not – Nobody; lots of middle-of-the-road here too
• Offensive impact rookies – There is the one guy, but we’re not sure if you’ve heard of him…
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – The top three are pretty good…
• and those on whom we’re not – The bottom two are not
• Impact rookie pitchers – Nada
• Save vultures – If Billy Wagner goes down, think BPBC from hell!

Top first year draft pick Stasburg joins the Washington Nationals

Washington Natinals (33:25)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – More ups than you’d think, actually…
• and those on whom we’re not – Though plenty of guys fall into this category as well
• Offensive impact rookies – Nope
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – Um…
• and those on whom we’re not – Everyone who can’t throw at least 102 MPH
• Impact rookie pitchers – This team has a decent prospect too, but his name hasn’t been mentioned 2 million times this offseason…yet
• Save vulture – There is another rookie on this team worth a flier, but you need to be pretty desperate
