The Can of Corn – 2010 “Centrals” Preview

By Michael Stephens

Welcome to The Can of Corn, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! Now we’re back in the saddle! With everything at the Can of Corn’s “studio” once again working as it should, we’re back with our second of three preseason shows on Fantasy Baseball Cafe Radio! With a short turnaround from the last show (as promised), the hosts give you their breakdowns of the American and National League’s Central divisions in this show, including the hitters and pitchers we like/don’t like on every team, impact rookies on each squad and also the most likely save vultures out of this pod of teams. If you’re a big fan of Frozen Ropes, The Hot Corner and Battle of the Wits, you’ve have to wait two more weeks for our bread and butter, but in the meantime we’ll have one more preview coming your way to help you late drafters be as ready as possible on the big day! So without further ado, it’s time to grab your glove and head for the outfield, because here comes The Can of Corn!

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Michigan News - February 23, 2010

Detroit Tigers (0:54)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – Mags has it in the bag
• and those on whom we’re not – no longer a catcher, no longer useful…
• Offensive impact rookie – we like speedy youngsters
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – Young flamethrowers
• and those on whom we’re not – everyone else
• Impact rookie pitchers – noonen
• Save vultures – flame tattoos are cool and all, but…

Chicago White Sox (4:36)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – there’s a lot to love with this offense
• and those on whom we’re not – except for these two guys
• Offensive impact rookies – coming up roses behind the plate
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – top end of the rotation
• and those on whom we’re not – anyone who actually throws pieces of garbage instead of pitches
• Impact rookie pitchers – nope
• Save vultures – three highly-capable setup guys makes for a murky situation for the south-siders

Minnesota Twins (8:14)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – Everyone in the top two thirds of the lineup
• and those on whom we’re not – old guys with bad backs, and fast guys with no pop
• Offensive impact rookies – not this year
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – Someone that got butchered, a Baker and a save vulture with many takers
• and those on whom we’re not – Tommy John surgery will land you on this list, every time!
• Impact rookie pitchers – no one
• Save vulture – with Joe Nathan down, don’t listen to the talking heads on who’s taking over…unless they agree with us!

Rockies v Royals

Kansas City Royals (12:22)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – There’s only one guy you really want on this offense
• and those on whom we’re not – but there are plenty you DON’T want
• Offensive impact rookies – check back in 2011
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – Cy Young winners make for good “highs”
• and those on whom we’re not – the rest, however, is REALLY ugly
• Impact rookie pitchers – but it might not be next year (and in the future) with these three guys!
• Save vultures – Kyle Farnsworth? FFS…

Cleveland Indians (14:48)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – We like this outfield (well, at least 2/3 of it)
• and those on whom we’re not – Big guys with lots of pop, terrible averages and lots of injury problems
• Offensive impact rookies – This guy is “smooth” (and we don’t mean Rob Thomas)
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – Jake Westbrook is Clevelands “ace”…
• and those on whom we’re not – read above; this leaves everyone, including him, in this category
• Impact rookie pitchers – A decent glut of young talent is waiting in the wings though
• Save vulture – The closer in waiting is waiting no longer!

NATIONAL LEAGUE

St. Louis Cardinals (17:59)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – You know the names, so plan accordingly
• and those on whom we’re not – Nate and Michael disagree here
• Offensive impact rookies – he’s a rookie, and he’s at the magical age of 27 – watch out!
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – Any hard-throwing veterans with Dave Duncan tutoring them in the offseason
• and those on whom we’re not – Kyle Lohse, because, well you know why…
• Impact rookie pitchers – the tank is on empty
• Save vultures – Better hope Mr. ZZ Top stays healthy this season

Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets at Citi Field in New York

Milwaukee Brewers (21:17)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – The Prince and his “cabinet”
• and those on whom we’re not – Guys with maddeningly high levels of talent and low levels of production
• Offensive impact rookies – Brew Crew ready to reload at two important positions
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – Almost everyone in the rotation…
• and those on whom we’re not – …except for this guy
• Impact rookie pitchers – no dice
• Save vulture – here are a couple of experienced middle relievers to file away in the back of your mind

Chicago Cubs (24:28)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – Not as exciting as they used to be, but still useful
• and those on whom we’re not – avoid these guys like the plague though – they’re on the precipice of doom!
• Offensive impact rookies – it’s really sparse this year, but check back in 2011-12
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – If you put a gun to our heads…
• and those on whom we’re not – Nate and Michael disagree again
• Impact rookie pitchers – Do they still have that mark Prior guy anymore?
• Save vulture – Some capable setup guys could take over if Carlos Marmol walks a guy per inning again in ‘10

Houston Astros (26:37)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – Go hunting for a puma that’s bourne from a horse (if you get that, you’re very nickname savvy)
• and those on whom we’re not – Sometimes, you have to cut the cord on guys like this
• Offensive impact rookies – see above
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – ol’ reliable
• and those on whom we’re not – cue host disagreement #3
• Impact rookie pitchers – Nada
• Save vultures – You’re going to have to own both “stoppers” to nail down the saves for the Colt .45s

World Baseball Classic- Mexico City Day 3

Cincinnati Reds (29:12)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – Youth is served
• and those on whom we’re not – …and old age is not!
• Offensive impact rookies – young talent is position blocked, but could be traded soon if they don’t get their chances
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – If you’re not Bronson Arroyo and you didn’t have Tommy John last year, we actually like you here
• and those on whom we’re not – If you are, or you did, then not so much…
• Impact rookie pitchers – There is one guy from a Caribbean island we heard about – something about throwing 102 in the preaseson?
• Save vulture – watch out for the glare from his earrings and he’s not that scary anymore

Pittsburgh Pirates (31:32)
• Hitters on whom we’re high – Again, youth is served
• and those on whom we’re not – though it’s not across the board for the NL Central’s lovable losers…
• Offensive impact rookies – a couple of big bats in waiting…to be called up and then eventually traded, of course!
• Pitchers on whom we’re high – it’s the Pirates
• and those on whom we’re not – meaning everyone really belongs here
• Impact rookie pitchers – it’s the Pirates, remember?
• Save vulture – If Octavio Dotel goes down, don’t bother with these guys…
