The Can of Corn – Show 1

By Michael Stephens

MLB: Brewers vs Rockies APR 06

Welcome to The Can of Corn, hosted by Michael Stephens and Nate Davis! Man it feels good to be back in the groove again! The hosts have worked long and hard preparing for the 2010 campaign, and with the regular season now 11 days old we have the first of our 25 regular season episodes of the Cafe’s own baseball podcast ready to roll! In this show (and every other one this season) we’ve brought back all of your favorite segments, Frozen Ropes, The Hot Corner, Battle of the Wits and Tools of the Week! To go along with those, we’ve added a few sub-segments (like Save Vultures and Cafe Games talk), and there will certainly be more surprises down the road too, so keep an ear to the ground, don’t over-manage your teams in the early going and grab your glove and head for the outfield – here comes The Can of Corn!

FROZEN ROPES (1:05)
• E-mail: We like Cafe newbies that like us!
• You MIGHT have heard of this guy, and this guy, and…Jason Heyward too…
• Middle infielders are dropping like, well, middle infielders (you know who you are Mr. Kinsler)
• Knee injuries aplenty – some with good news and some not so much
• Fallen aces might be on their way back soon (unless they’re named Brandon)
• Plenty of closers are leaving jobs open already, proving WHY YOU DON’T (EVER) PAY FOR SAVES
• Vulture saves – there are already four guys about whom you need to know (8:40)
• Hot hitters and hurlers (10:17)
• And their frigid counterparts
• Cafe Talk – 3 topics of interest (and our shameless pimping in their posts, and a rant) (13:46)
• Cafe Games – well, what are you waiting for? Get your butts over there and play already (Nate)!

MLB: Royals at Tigers APR 12

HOT CORNER (18:35)
• Explanation of rules, etc.
• Just how bad are the Astros?
• A big name with a 3-homer deficit, or a well-known bum with a 3-homer lead?
• History has a tendency to repeat itself (in this case, it’s Vernon Wells’ history about which we’re speaking)
• Which vulture will fend off his injured incumbent teammate?
• How loud will the Thunder sound in the NBA playoffs?

BATTLE OF THE WITS (21:12)
• Explanation of rules, etc.
• Michael thinks the “North-siders” have it this week
• Nate loves last year’s bandwagon (and why not with their upcoming schedule?)

TOOLS OF THE WEEK (22:10)
• Five-tool Player of the Week – it will be named after him before you know it
• Honorable mention – Cruzing to some ridiculous numbers of his own
• Tool of the Week – Not a good start for the “horse” of this already week lineup
• Honorable mention – Blowing two saves in a week and losing your job will get you on this list in a hurry!

MLB: Brewers vs Cardinals APR 10
