Wednesday’s Wide World of Waivers welcomes you back. Chris made some nice picks last week. Montero continued to put up great numbers for a catcher. Nunez seems to have a solid handle on the closer’s job with the Marlins; he picked up two saves and one loss last week but should be a nice play the rest of the season. Blanks hit three HRs last week, and it looks like the rookie’s power will get him plenty of ABs the rest of the year. David Murphy sticks out as the only low point from last week’s picks. His HR Sunday night was his only hit in the last four games. This week I’ve got four new selections to help your team make that playoff push.
As always the cutoffs are 50% Yahoo ownership in mixed leagues and 20% Yahoo ownership in for NL/AL only leagues.
Standard Mixed Leagues
Kevin Kouzmanoff, 3B, SD
| Yahoo | ESPN | CBS | |
| Owned % | 12 | 9 | 47 |
| Runs | HR | RBI | SB | AVG | |
| Week 17 Stats | 4 | 1 | 5 | 0 | .350 |
Kouzmanoff has been a bit of a riddle the last few years. He has always had power, but Petco isn’t a launching pad, and he hasn’t hit for a high batting average. Kouzmanoff started off the year ridiculously slow; even after he starting turning it around, he is still available in many leagues. His SLG% has increased each month from .326 in April, to .367 in May, to .465 in June, to .500 in July. He’s also made strides with his batting average, hitting .309 the last month.
Mat Latos, SP, SD
| Yahoo | ESPN | CBS | |
| Owned % | 17 | 4 | 68 |
| IP | W | K | ERA | WHIP | |
| Week 17 Stats | 14 | 2 | 7 | 1.93 | 0.71 |
Latos was ranked as one of the Padres’ top prospects before the season and he has more than lived up to the billing. He dominated at Fort Wayne, posting a 3-0 record and a 0.36 ERA. He continued the great season by going 5-1 with a 1.91 in Double-A San Antonio. He’s 3-1 with a 2.66 ERA since being promoted to the big leagues. Latos will provide a nice amount of Ks while helping out in WHIP and ERA.
NL-Only Leagues
Gerardo Parra, OF, ARI
| Yahoo | ESPN | CBS | |
| Owned % | 3 | 1 | 14 |
| Runs | HR | RBI | SB | AVG | |
| Week 17 Stats | 3 | 0 | 3 | 1 | .318 |
Parra has come into his own since his move to the second spot in Arizona’s lineup. In the past month, he is hitting .312 with 16 Rs, 16 RBIs, 2 HRs, and 2 SBs. While he isn’t topping the charts in any one category, that is some great production out of someone available in 97% of Yahoo leagues.
AL-Only Leagues
Rajai Davis, OF, OAK
| Yahoo | ESPN | CBS | |
| Owned % | 4 | 1 | 11 |
| Runs | HR | RBI | SB | AVG | |
| Week 17 Stats | 5 | 0 | 9 | 2 | .429 |
Davis stole 29 bases last year in only 214 ABs — not only that, but he did it while posting a .271 OBP. All that adds up to some major speed, and while Davis is hitting he will light up the basepaths and your team’s SB total. Davis has been hitting .400 over the past month and with the Matt Holliday trade, Davis should be seeing more playing time. If you don’t need SBs I’d stay away, but if you are looking for SBs, Rajai is your man.
Please let us know what you think by posting in the discussion thread. Feedback is always appreciated. Chris will be back for next week’s Wednesday’s Wide World of Waivers with four new waiver pickups. In the meantime, keep watching that waiver wire!
