Trading Manny?

By Tim Ardan

“Manny being Manny” just opened a new chapter. It’s old news by now, but his 50 game suspension brings up a question. Will you trade for Manny Ramirez? He is eligible to return on July 3, so you would still get a good three months before the end of the season. Manny will also be on a mission when he returns, and when Manny is on a mission, he is unstoppable. When he was traded to the Dodgers, he was on a quest for a four-year, $100 million contract. To try to achieve that goal, he posted the following line:

53 Gs, 187 ABs, 36 Rs, 74 Hs, 14 2Bs, 17 HRs, 53 RBIs, 35 BBs, .396 AVG

Manny will have about the same amount of games when he comes back, meaning that a torrid line like that is possible. He will be rested, meaning that his hamstring should be healed by then. All of this adds up to “Manny being Manny.”

Now comes the question: do you want him on your roster? He cannot be stashed on the DL, so he will take up a bench spot. He will come at a discounted price, so if you can package two spare parts to get him, do it. He will win you games in those final three months. If you have Manny in a head-to-head league, keep him. In three months, you can make up the distance. If you are in rotisserie league and don’t have someone to pick up the slack, you may be forced to trade him, because you do not want have to work from the bottom. Make sure you land a quality guy or two in a trade, however.

Tim is looking forward to a Kobe-Lebron championship and Favre ruining the Vikings.
