Sleeper Watch

By R.J. White

Ah, September is in the air. For most of the fantasy world, this means we dive headfirst into football, focusing almost all of our attention on winning that Week 1 contest. But September also brings a bunch of wet-behind-the-ears kids to the majors, as rosters expand and teams add players they either think will help them with a playoff push or think could help them next year. One such call-up is Cleveland Indians OF Michael Brantley.

Brantley’s main weapon is his speed. He’s stolen 46 bases in Triple-A this year, getting caught just five times. That puts him at 150 SBs in his minor league career, at a success rate of 81.5%. Obviously, if given regular playing time in the majors, he could be of great help to your steals category in September. Well, since being called up, the Indians have sent him out there again and again. He’s spent a majority of time leading off and was scheduled to do so again on Monday before the game was postponed.

With a spot atop the lineup, we know Brantley can help us in both runs and steals. The call-up has also fired up his swing, and the 22-year-old has gotten at least one hit in each of his six games. He’s 9-for-23 overall (for a .391 batting average) and has one steal in his first week in the majors. Expect him to maintain a .300 average, give you 10-15 runs and 5-7 SBs in September. If that’s something you can use, scoop him up.
