In the first Future Rookies of the year, I gushed about Kyle Blanks, a big power prospect for San Diego. I thought he’d stay in the minors most of the year, as he really could only play first base, which meant he was blocked in San Diego by Adrian Gonzalez. The Padres decided they wanted to see him in the majors, so they sent him to the outfield. While it’s not an ideal fit for Blanks, it’s where he’ll have to play if he’s going to be in the same lineup as Gonzalez.
The big guy has proved his bat is ready for the majors, hitting .293 and five HRs in the last two weeks. With Blanks playing nearly every day in San Diego, he’s a great pickup for anyone in need of cheap power. Owned in just 4% of standard Yahoo leagues, Blanks can be slotted into your fantasy lineup at 1B, CI, or OF. If you weren’t able to snag Kendry Morales or Josh Willingham, I’d definitely give Blanks a try. I picked him up in one league as a replacement for Juan Pierre, who’s obviously going to see less time with Manny back.
Roto-leaguers, if you’re clumped together with a few teams in the HR department and need a boost, Blanks is a good an add as any.
