News flash: Sales of Yoo-Hoo skyrocket! Actually, I don’t know that for fact, but it begs a curious question… How many of you league champions crowned yourselves this evening with a frosty Yoo-Hoo (or several) in celebration? Is this tradition over, or is it still going strong? Regardless of the type of celebration, congratulations to everyone who managed to win at least one fantasy league this season! Right about now there are four kinds of fantasy baseball fans out there. Most everyone fits into one of these categories.
Champ plus playoffs: These are the league champions who also have the joy of watching their favorite real life team continue their season and try to win the World Series. We all hope to win our respective leagues and also see our favorite teams do well. For those of you in this category, life is really, really good right about now.
Champ but no playoffs: This group is basking in the glow of winning their league, but cussing their favorite team for not being able to make the playoffs. These owners can most likely tell you exactly why their favorite real life team didn’t make the playoffs and what the team needs to do in the off-season in order to ensure a playoff finish next year.
Not a champ, but there are playoffs: While these owners didn’t manage to win a fantasy title this season, their favorite team is still going strong and has a chance to win it all in the real world. A World Series victory out of their favorite team would help take the sting out of them not winning a fantasy title this year.
Not a champ and no playoffs: Hi. That’s me this year. Ugly fantasy season and a Texas Ranger fan. Doesn’t get much worse for the people in this group. Luckily, next season will be here before you know it, and some of us are already working on making sure we do better next year. With any luck, our real life favorite teams will be doing the same and as long as one of the two works out, we won’t be stuck in this group one year from now.
Again, congratulations on those championships this year. Fantasy baseball is a marathon, not a sprint, so it takes a lot of drive and determination to win a fantasy baseball league. Be proud guys and gals, you’ve earned those trophies! And may the playoffs bring us all some really good and wonderful baseball games to wrap up the season before we hunker down for a cold winter.
