Sleeper Watch

By Madison Jones

Third base is generally considered deep and a position on your roster where you have a source of power and runs driven in. However, if you are in a deep league, a league with tons of keepers, or a dynasty league, you might want to jump all over Blake DeWitt while you can. This rookie has been on fire the past week, hitting .412, scoring six runs, driving in seven, and knocking two out of the park. Well… one of the two home runs was an inside-the-park job, but it still counts in the HR column for scoring purposes.

This hot week has brought DeWitt’s line for this season up to a .306 average, while scoring fifteen runs, driving in eighteen, smacking two homers, and stealing a base for good measure. Nice line for a 22-year-old rookie. Last year in split time between Single-A and Double-A, Blake put up the following line in 517 at-bats: .292 average, 14 home runs, 66 runs driven in, 68 runs scored, and 2 stolen bases. Not bad at all for a kid who was finally old enough to legally buy a beer.

This youngster is not going to be the major stud you pull out of the free agent pool that goes crazy and has a monster year, but he does have value in deeper leagues and leagues where he can be kept at a cheap price for next year. If you need a pick-me-up, a fill-in, or just flat need to cut some dead weight from your bench, DeWitt just might be your man.
