In 2001, Steve Trachsel’s era before the All-Star break was a dismal 6.72, thanks to the .316 average he was allowing opposing batters. After the midsummer classic, opponents only managed a .201 average, and Trachsel’s era went down to 2.74. His pre-break record: 2-10. Post-break: 9-3.
The same thing happened last season. Prior to the infamous tie game that left a sour taste in fans’ mouths, Trachsel’s era was 3.87. After the break, that number fell to 2.72.
Guess what - Trachsel is at it again. After landing himself on many fantasy leagues’ waiver lists with a 4.61 era and a 1.46 whip before the break, the Mets’ hurler has bounced back with stellar marks of 2.75 and 1.17, respectively. In the last month, he has been nearly unstoppable, with four wins a whip of 0.93 and an era of 1.51.
Trachsel is pitching with confidence and authority, and should continue to put up solid numbers in September. If you need one more arm for your drive to the pennant and Trachsel is still floundering in free agent limbo, pick him up and give him a shot.
