There’s currently a great deal of fantasy interest in Preston Wilson’s move to Colorado and the monster numbers he might put up in Coors Field, and that eager anticipation is certainly justified. Just don’t forget about Jay Payton.
Payton never quite lived up to his billing while with the New York Mets, but he was a ballplayer reborn after being shipped to the Rockies. In 47 games with his new team, Payton raised hit .335 with a .606 slugging percentage. In 74 at bats at Coors field, Payton hit an amazing .473 and drove in 19 runs.
While Payton might not quite repeat those numbers, he should provide very solid fantasy offense at a surprisingly low price. Following his change of scenery, Payton’s confidence is certainly mile-high. The only cloud on the horizon is the Rockies somewhat crowded outfield. Along with Payton, Wilson and Larry Walker, Colorado will also try to find playing time for Gabe Kapler and Jack Cust. The possibility of days off makes Payton’s value significantly higher in leagues that allow daily roster changes, which also allow you to take advantage of Payton’s home games while using other options on the road. Platooning Payton with a speed-only outfielder such as Dave Roberts would be a very appealing strategy.
With Wilson in the limelight, Payton has been slipping much farther than he should in many fantasy drafts. Don’t make the mistake of overlooking him.
