Sleeper Watch

By Arlo Vander

With most drafts completed, it’s time to look for players who may have fallen through the cracks and could give your team a boost. Vicente Padilla (SP, Philadelphia Phillies) may be just such a player. His k/bb ratio was solid last year, and his value soars now that he’s found a spot in the Phillies’ rotation. It remains to be seen how he handles a starter’s workload, but after seeing him stay in the game after being drilled in the leg by a Chipper Jones line drive, you have to respect his toughness. (He threw Jones out, too). The word is that he’ll occasionally help himself at the plate as well. All in all, expect Padilla to show good control and post respectable numbers across the board (don’t look for too many wins, however). If your draft left you with a pitcher you’re not happy with in your final rotation slot, consider taking a flyer on Padilla.
