Sleeper Watch

By Arlo Vander

When the Twins dealt Brian Buchanan to San Diego for A-level ss Jason Bartlett, the move didn’t generate very many headlines, especially compared with other recent trades. Nonetheless, this is one deal that will have signifaicant fantasy implications: with Buchanan gone, top prospect Mike Cuddyer was called up to take his place.

We’ve been impressed by Cuddyer’s bat and determination for quite some time (he just missed cracking the top 10 in our minor league rankings earlier this year), and his exploits at AAA Edmonton have only confirmed that opinion. Along with socking 20 homers and driving in 51 runs, Cuddyer hit a very impressive .311, earning AAA all-star status.

In his first game in Minnesota this season, Cuddyer came in as a pinch-hitter (striking out), but he should be in the starting lineup often from here on. When not playing of, Cuddyer is expected to see action at 1b and 3b, although we’d be surprised if his playing time at either infield position will be enough for him to qualify there next year.

If you’re in a deep league and could use a shot in the arm, Cuddyer is as good a gamble as any call-up. Don’t expect miracles right away from a player this young, however. It will be interesting to see how quickly he can adjust to major league pitching, but we’re optimistic that he’ll be a fast learner.

If you’re in a keeper league, grab him now and don’t let go…
