Sleeper Watch

By Arlo Vander

The fact that the Padres shifted both Phil Nevin and Ryan Klesko in order to make room for Sean Burroughs (3B, San Diego Padres) shows how much they think of him. Although comparisons with the great George Brett are premature, Burroughs should be near the top of your list of rookies to draft this year; guaranteed playing time is a bonus not many newcomers bring with them. Burroughs has a smooth swing and should hit for a decent average; don’t expect too much power, though. He won’t be in the top echelon of third basemen in 2002, but you could certainly do worse, and his keeper potential is excellent.
